REPAIRS and RECONDITIONING
From time to time, one of the thousands of parts that make up a piano will break or no longer function properly. Sometimes the broken part can be repaired. For example, a broken hammer shank can frequently be repaired, a loose ivory key top can be re-affixed, and grooved hammer felts can be re-filed. Other types of problems require replacement. A broken string usually will need replacing though occasionally, a broken string can be "spliced". Pedals and the pedal mechanisms, called the "trapwork", frequently develop squeaks or become loose. Certain parts of the case, notably the music desk and the bench, are subject to various problems that need attention.
Reconditioning includes cleaning the piano and repairing or replacing those parts that no longer function well. Its purpose is to put the piano back into good working order without incurring the expense and time commitment of a rebuild.
